Getting Started Blogging - Day 1
So I challenged myself to get the word out about this website. To reach the goal of 1000 unique visitors a day for 4 consecutive days, I started by laying out a plan. The first step was to schedule very precisely the first week, then less precisely the 2nd week, and so on and so forth. The schedule for each day is the equivalent of a 9 to 5 work day.
Today was Setup Day. This is what I did today :
- check out the competition
- pick a name and register it
- setup hosting and email
- install WordPress
- choose a theme and install it (I’m using DePo Clean by D. Powazek)
- install interesting plugins (Google XML Sitemaps, Subscribe To Comments, WP-ContactForm, WP-Email, and Yet Another Related Posts Plugin)
- tweak the theme to my taste
- setup a statistics account at StatCounter
- install the statistics into the blog
- open a Feedburner account
- setup the blog to use the feedburner features
- write an introductory post
- write a post to attract ideas for the first challenge we will be running
- brainstorm ideas for future articles about self-improvement
- write 2 articles drafts
- brainstorm for a list of measurable metrics to assess this site’s success
And finally, I’m writing my first daily report for the “Getting Started” challenge. Tomorrow I’ll be finishing the 2 articles and start 1 other draft. I’ll put content in the “About” page. I’ll be subscribing to other self-improvement blogs’ RSS feed to get new ideas about what to write about. I’ll also get their email to start networking with them in the future. I’ll join social media sites like Digg and Reddit and start promoting this site there.
